History of the Refrigeration Process

January 28, 2012

The usage of ice for keeping the goods fresh can be dated to pre historic times. Almost all the cultures show evidence that ice was used in conserving the food products. This gave rise to ice harvesting around the globe. First chemical refrigeration process was used in 16th century where sodium nitrate and potassium nitrate was added to water to create the ice effect. The first artificial refrigeration method was discovered in 1748 where creating a partial vacuum over diethyl ether which was then boiled absorbed the heat from the atmosphere and created ice. Later on the other mechanical methods of refrigeration with the help of vapor compression and ammonia were developed and vehicles were refrigerated to carry the highly perishable products from one place to other. This method was called central refrigerated trucking where vehicles were refrigerated and products were transported. This method is now used for food products, medical supplies and many other vital products.
